Tata Group buys big stake in Big Basket, Amazon and Flipkart to clash

Tata Digital (Tata Digital) has acquired a majority stake in online grocery company BigBasket (BigBasket).

New Delhi. Tata Digital Limited (Tata Digital Ltd) of Tata Sons Pvt Ltd has acquired a large stake in Big Basket (BigBasket), the country’s largest online grocery company supported by Alibaba. Tata Digital is a 100 per cent owned subsidiary of tata sons, the group’s holding company. With this deal, Tata Group has now paved the way for a direct confrontation with companies like Amazon (Amazon) and Flipkart (Flipkart) in the retail sector.

Tata Digital CEO Pratik Pal said on Friday, “The biggest expenditure in personal consumption spending in India is called grocery goods. Big Basket being India’s largest e-grocery company, a large consumer fits perfectly in our strategy of creating digital ecology.”

The value of this deal is not stated. E-grocery is the fastest growing in the country’s consumer e-commerce business. Increasing consumer spending and digitization in India is helping expand the sector. Online purchases have increased in this era of corona epidemic. The consumer today orders good quality goods and wants it to reach his home safely.

Big Basket was founded in Bengaluru in 2011. Since then it has made its presence felt in 25 cities in the country. “After becoming a part of tata group, we are very excited about our future,” said Hari Menon, CEO, Big Basket. By joining tata group, we will be able to connect with the consumer better and move on to our journey ahead.”
